Fostering Resilience: Supporting those who support our students

This course is specifically designed for educational professionals who support students.  Paraprofessionals and non-certified staff have a crucial role in education, and we couldn’t do our jobs effectively without them.  Further, due to contracts and budget restraints, they are often excluded from professional development opportunities.  This is why Kristin designed this course specifically for them.

In this engaging, relevant, and practical introductory session, learn from childhood trauma expert Kristin Souers (lead author of the best-selling and award-winning Fostering Resilient Learners: Strategies for creating a trauma-sensitive classroom – ASCD, 2016 and Relationship, Responsibility and Regulation: Trauma Invested Practices for Fostering Resilient Learners; 2019) about the importance of incorporating trauma-invested practices into the work we do with each other and our youth.

This course has 5 modules designed to give you a brief overview of what is essential when providing trauma invested practices.  Kristin will talk you through each module and share ideas for how you can support your most struggling students.

The five modules are:

1.      Essential Understandings—you will be introduced to key terms all education professionals must know.

2.     The impact of toxic stress on teaching and learning—Kristin will share with you the latest research about how stress is impacting education and she will share with you some ideas for what you can do to support one another and the youth you serve.

3.     Mindsets—Kristin will share with you the impact that negative mindsets can have on success and will offer ideas for how you can “reframe” your experiences.

4.    Need vs. Behavior—Behavior is a form of communication, and every behavior is an expression of a need.  Kristin will share with you the 4 basic needs that drive behavior and give you ideas and strategies for helping to meet those needs effectively.

5.     Self-Care:  Taking Care of our own health and wellness—Let’s face it, if we aren’t taking care of ourselves, we will have a hard time effectively taking care of others.  Kristin will walk you through the ten things you need to be doing every day to take care of your own health and wellness.  She will also remind you about your “why” and give you tips for staying grounded in how others experience you.

At the end of each module are knowledge check questions for attendees to answer to ensure that learning did occur.  Attendees must get an 80% on each test in order to move onto the next section. Once the course has been completed, they can download a certificate of completion,
